Going to Confession

If you have not been to confession in a while, use the guide below, you may also let the priest know
and he will help you.

1.  Begin with the Sign of the Cross, while saying "Bless me father for I have sinned.
It has been (number of months / years) since my last confession.  These are my sins:"

2.  Confess your sins to the priest.  Say the amount of times if needed, or bring a list to read if you have

trouble remembering when you go to confession.  Then, say, "I am sorry for these and all of my sins."

3.  The priest will talk to you and will ask you to say an Act of Contrition (below); while the priest will pray for you.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.

or:

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.  In his name, my God, have mercy.

4.  The priest will give you a penance to do, and absolution from God, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit (end with the Sign of the Cross).

5.  The priest will lastly say "Give thanks to the Lord for He is Good.  You reply:  His Mercy Endures Forever."

Go in peace and do the penance the priest has given.

God Bless You!

Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” - John 20:23
